Skinny Flowers Brewing Company TM is a new craft brewery to be built in Monmouth County, NJ that is seeking to hire a Head Brewer. We are not only looking to hire a Head Brewer, we are looking to hire a great person (who of course makes great beer), a partner and part owner of the business we will build together.


Skinny Flowers is currently owned 100% by Jim and Liz, two long time senior and executive management professionals for large multinational corporations as well as high performing athletes. Over the last few years Jim and Liz have been nurturing their passion for craft beer and craft breweries into their vision for Skinny Flowers. As we are starting to make critical decisions and invest meaningful capital, we are excited to be focused on finding our Head Brewer. Our goal is that our Head Brewer be a key part of the vision for Skinny Flowers and to have the opportunity to be part of our roots. Skinny Flowers will be a 3 vessel 15 bbl brewery (Head Brewer will make final decision here) of approximately 6,000 square feet with an open air design coupled with outdoor space.


About the role:

If you’re an experienced and accomplished head brewer, or a highly experienced brewer looking to make your move into a Head Brewer position, and you believe in our vision and guiding principles, we would love to hear from you. You will have the opportunity to have your hands on the creation of Skinny Flowers Brewing Company from the start along with the opportunity to be a partner and owner.


Responsibilities:

As we grow, you will be a mentor and coach to the team, training new hires and continuing the development of the team over time. You will manage recipe design, inventory and ordering, and manage the mechanical components of the brewhouse. You will partner with the front of house manager and team to ensure our handcrafted beer is presented and served to our customers the way you envision our product to be presented and served to our customers. The ideal Head Brewer will thrive working both autonomously and working with others in a team setting and culture.


Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Recipe design;
  • Production scheduling;
  • Raw materials and inventory/ordering;
  • Malt and hop contracts as well as inventory control;
  • Hiring, leading, coaching and developing our brewhouse team members;
  • Managing the brewing team schedule;
  • Supervising and assisting with QA and QC
  • Ensuring cleaning and maintenance schedules are adhered to;
  • Create and manage SOPs specifically regarding safety, sanitation, and chemical use;
  • Troubleshooting and repairing brewing equipment and knowing when to kick it up the chain;
  • Attending conferences and training opportunities in order to keep up on new methods and procedures;
  • Proficiency in packaging;
  • Collaborate on various projects, festivals and customer events;
  • Make high quality beer while having fun individually and as part of the team!


Requirements:

  • Post-secondary Diploma in Brewing, Bachelor’s Degree in applicable science, or other relevant post-secondary credential preferred
  • 5+ years in a Head Brewer role or equivalent
  • Good understanding of chemistry, biology and yeast propagation/management
  • Experience with lab and quality control procedures
  • Experience in recipe research and development
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or Google Calendars and Email as well as Ekos and Quickbooks (or equivalents)
  • Mechanical aptitude an asset
  • Driver’s License and reliable transportation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Type of Position:

This is a full-time position.


Compensation:

Market competitive salary commensurate with experience. Market competitive benefits. Our Head Brewer will also receive an ownership interest in Skinny Flowers, details of which will be discussed with shortlisted Head Brewer candidates. This is a very important component for both the candidates and the current owners.


What you can expect from the Interview Process:

  • Introductory Video Meeting: 30-60 minutes to talk about you, to talk about Skinny Flowers, the Head Brewer role, to learn about Jim and Liz, to discuss the vision and for us to learn more about you, your experience and desired next steps in your career. The goal is to ensure both parties are expecting the same out of the position. This call will be with Jim.
  • First Interview: Video interview or In Person (depending on your location) individually with Jim and Liz.
  • Second Interview: In person interview, realizing travel may be required.
  • We will then develop a short list of Head Brewer candidates and proceed further with the process.
